Stay safe at home this Christmas

Published 10 December 2024

Christmas is a time to relax, but it’s important to stay safe at home. Here are some simple tips to keep your home safe and warm:

  1. Check your Christmas lights

Before using your Christmas lights, check for any damaged wires or bulbs. Turn them off before going to bed or leaving the house.

  1. Don’t overload electrical sockets

It can be tempting to plug lots of things into one socket, but this can be dangerous. Use extension leads with surge protection and avoid overloading.

  1. Candle safety

Candles create a nice atmosphere, but use them safely. Always place them on a stable surface, away from anything flammable, and never leave them unattended.

  1. Be careful when cooking

Christmas dinner can be busy, so keep an eye on your cooking. Keep surfaces clear and make sure tea towels or oven gloves are away from open flames.

  1. Stay warm safely

If you use portable heaters, keep them away from furniture and curtains. Don’t use them to dry clothes, and always turn them off when you go to bed.

  1. Keep walkways clear

With decorations and gifts, it’s easy for paths to become cluttered. Keep doorways and stairs clear to avoid trips and falls, especially if you have visitors.

  1. Be prepared for cold weather

Cold weather can cause problems like frozen pipes or icy paths. Stock up on grit or salt for icy walkways, and know where your water stopcock is in case of emergency.
